Boundary Markers
You cannot enter Norton sub Hamdon without passing one of the three large hamstone boundary stones. Carved from the distinctive golden hamstone these markers cannot be missed. standing prominently as they do at the roadsides. Richard England, owner of the Ham & Doulton Stone Company, donated the stone and each was carved by South Petherton stone mason, Shean Monaghan who works at the quarry.

Map drawn by Jean Dunkley
The parish Council received numerous entries from local residents with designs for each of the stones.

Erected in 1995 on the grass verge at Turnpike, the first stone (above) depicts the pigeon house from a design by Mauvyn Greenham. It cost £545

The second stone (above) was erected in November 1996 at Greenham's Cross. The design, by Phil Davies, depicts the hands of the stone mason at work chiseling the lettering of the words 'Norton sub Hamdon' on to the face. It cost £220.

The final of the stones was erected in March 1999 on the verge in New Road, just pass the last house in the village. It was designed by Peter Barnard and shows a frame from a window in the church. It cost £650.
